A dead humpback whale washed ashore at Rio Del Mar State Beach Monday. California State Parks Ranger Joseph Carr Ritchie said the male humpback was about 13 years old. Researchers are looking into the cause of death while California State Parks is looking into how to remove the 30-foot mammal. Scores of curious onlookers have been flocking to the shoreline for a glimpse of the whale.

The Apple Fire in Riverside County has now blackened more than 42 square miles. The blaze, tearing through rugged terrain of dry grass, brush and trees is only 15% contained, Cal Fire said. Thus far one home has been destroyed and thousands of people have been evacuated. Investigators said the fire was started by a malfunctioning diesel engine. A Strike Team from Santa Cruz County, including a crew from Watsonville Fire, is currently at the scene.

As of today the City of Watsonville has implemented a face covering ordinance. Anyone who is not wearing a face covering when in public spaces will be ticketed. That includes most indoor settings and public transportation or ride-share services. People must also wear a face covering outdoors when they cannot stay six feet away from others. Staff at the Monterey Bay Aquarium has been setting up live web cams inside its various exhibits since the start of the pandemic in March. From the Open Sea exhibit to its penguin enclosure, the live streams have been very popular, with viewers from all over the world tuning in via Facebook. Some of the streams have been held to raise money for the aquarium, which has been closed since mid-March. Visit montereybayaquarium.org for information and to donate.

Monterey Bay Murals’ Paul De Worken and community helpers are approaching completion of the new mural at the Watsonville Transit Center. The mural depicts a number of Watsonville landmarks and themes. Check MBM’s Facebook for updates.

Along with hearing the community’s opinions about possibly moving the George Washington bust from the City Plaza at its Monday night meeting, the Parks and Recreation Commission also heard about Pajaro Valley Arts’ plans for its 2020 Movable Murals theme. Treasurer Judy Stabile said this year’s pieces will focus on face masks. The official theme will be announced soon and a call for artists will follow.
