Ceiba College Prep freshman Nellie Rubio-Pintor edged Oakwood sophomore Kate Marcotullio by a tenth of a second to finish first in Pacific Coast Athletic League Santa Lucia Center Meet 3 at Toro Park in Salinas on Oct. 18.
Rubio-Pintor completed the 3-mile course in 20 minutes, 44.50 seconds.
St. Francis won the meet 26-59 over Christopher to complete the season sweep. Juniors Angelika Castro (22:06.5) and Camryn Ryan (22:33.8), and senior Riley Croghan (22:35.5) finished 3-4-5.
Monte Vista Christian junior Elizabeth Splees was the Mustangs’ top finisher, taking seventh (24:10.3).
• Ruiz takes first – Watsonville’s Layla Ruiz cruised to first place in PCAL-Cypress Center Meet 3 on Oct. 18 at Toro Park.
Ruiz finished the 3-mile course in 19:37.4.
Watsonville finished second as a team with 64 points behind Seaside, which had 54 points.
Watsonville’s Carolina Avalos took 10th (24:09.3).
Caitlan Paat was Pajaro Valley’s top finisher. The junior took 15th in 24:46.3.
• Zlatunich, Estrada finish in top 10 – Aptos’ Kailea Zlatunich and Susana Estrada finished fifth and ninth respectively at the Ken Thomas Invitational on Oct. 18 in Soquel.
Zlatunich ran the 2.8-mile course in 17:02, and Estrada followed in 17:43.
BOYS CROSS COUNTRY
• St. Francis 26, M.V.C. 31 – E.J. Kelly scored a wire-to-wire victory to lead St. Francis over M.V.C. in PCAL-Santa Lucia Center Meet 3 on Oct. 18 at Toro Park.
Kelly, a senior, crossed the finish line of the 3-mile course in 16:57.
M.V.C. sophomore Andrew Bachman placed second behind Kelly in 17:12.
St. Francis also had Patrick McCarthy (3rd, 17:26), Paul Kane (6th, 17:48), Julian Vargas (10th, 18:33) and Erik Kane (11th, 18:42) score.
Ceiba senior Jarrod Garcia led the Spartans in 26th in 21:58.
• Rivas places 5th – Junior Damian Rivas was the lone Watsonville runner to finish in the top 10 of Oct. 18’s PCAL-Cypress Center Meet 3.
Rivas placed 5th, completing the 3-mile course in 18:12.
Watsonville, which was missing two of its top three runners to injury, was fourth as a team with 84 points. Gonzales won the meet with 33 points.
Junior Bernie Mora was Pajaro Valley’s top finisher. He took 41st in 24:24.
• Ken Thomas Invite – Aptos senior Josiah Sweet took second at the Ken Thomas Invitational on Oct. 20 at Soquel.
Sweet cruised through the 2.8-mile course in 14:16.
GIRLS WATER POLO
• Aptos 12, Carmel 4 – Kelly Taylor scored six goals for Aptos in its PCAL-Gabilan regular season finale on Tuesday.
Jordan Wagner, Kristen Malone and Jesse Chamberlain all added two goals a piece.
MEN’S JC SOCCER
• West Valley 3, Cabrillo 0 – Cabrillo College was shut out in its Coast Conference South division loss on Tuesday night.
The loss came just five days after Cabrillo (2-8-4, 2-6-1) beat Monterey Peninsula College, 6-0.
Mohamed Ismail, Ventura Garcia, Marco Lopez, Will Christman, Daniel Cardiel and Steven Compoginis all scored for the Seahawks in their Oct. 19 win.
WOMEN’S JC VOLLEYBALL
• Cabrillo 3, C.C.S.F. 0 – Cabrillo College recorded a 25-16, 25-15, 25-7 sweep over City College of San Francisco in Coast Conference North division play on Wednesday.
Cabrillo also scored a 25-18, 25-12, 25-19 non-conference win over Foothill College on Oct. 20. Jolie Samuelson had 11 kills, three aces and three digs in the win.
JC FOOTBALL
• Cabrillo 40, Gavilan 17 – Josh Barron tossed four touchdown passes, Ramon Gordon caught two of them and Cabrillo College rolled past Gavilan College for its first American Golden Coast Conference victory on Oct. 20 in Aptos.
Barron, a freshman, completed 16-of-23 passes for 314 yards, the four scores and two interceptions.
Gordon made four receptions for 106 yards and the two touchdowns.
Kameron Pleasant led all Cabrillo (4-3, 1-2) receivers with seven catches for 141 yards and a touchdown. Ken Nesbitt also caught a touchdown.
Cole Davis rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, while Ladale Combs rushed 15 times for 102 yards.
Aaron Pitts led the Seahawks on the other side of the ball, finishing with seven total tackles, including one for loss, and an interception.
Cabrillo will look to make it two in a row on Saturday at San Jose City College at 1 p.m.
GIRLS VOLLEYBALL
• PV 3, Stevenson 0 – Pajaro Valley closed its regular season with a 25-13, 25-23, 25-12 win behind Julie Che’s 12 kills and five digs.
Isabella Langarica added eight kills and five digs, and Kayla Salazar made 27 assists and snuck in three aces.
Pajaro Valley finishes the regular season with a 13-13 overall record and a 7-7 PCAL-Cypress standing.
• Aptos 3, Santa Cruz 1 – Aptos closed out its Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League season with a 26-24, 23-25, 25-20, 25-18 win on senior night on Wednesday.
Aptos (23-8, 10-2) honored five seniors: Jillian Rodriguez, Caroline Greenly, Alondra Tapia, Carolina Ogden and Chloe Manor.
The Mariners will continue their season in the Central Coast Section playoffs on Saturday as one of the SCCAL’s two automatic qualifiers.
Aptos finished the regular season with four straight league wins, including Oct. 18’s 25-15, 26-24, 25-12 sweep of Mt. Madonna and Monday’s 24-26, 25-17, 26-24, 25-16 win over Scotts Valley.
Against Scotts Valley, Peyton Dueck had 18 kills, nine digs and two aces, and Natalia Ackerman supplied 14 kills and four blocks.
• M.V.C. 3, King City 1 – M.V.C. sent off its seniors with a 25-18, 25-14, 23-25, 25-13 PCAL-Gabilan victory on Wednesday night.
The Mustangs (13-19, 5-9), who honored seniors Malou Oostveen, Christine Vea, Angelica Alcantar, Britlyn Coleman, Kailey Morrell and Angelina Walker, finished fifth in the PCAL-Gabilan.
