APTOS– The Seahawks fell to West Valley College, 61-59, in Coast Conference South Division play at the Adobe Palace on Friday night.
The loss snapped a three-game win streak for Cabrillo and forced the Seahawks to share the division title with West Valley. Both schools finished 8-4 in the standings.
Sophomore Hunter Seymour, who finished with nine points and 12 rebounds, said the stakes were high.
“[We’re] never satisfied,” said Seymour about sharing the conference title with West Valley. “It’s not what we wanted but it’s something.”
It’s Cabrillo coach Tony Marcopolus’ 10th conference title in 20 years.
The bracket for the Northern California tournament will be announced Monday. The first round begins Wednesday.
The Vikings (17-10) will get the league’s top spot for seeding purposes after beating the Seahawks twice.
Seymour said the moment may have been too big for a young team that struggled to find any rhythm early.
“They were really excited and just had to calm down, get in our groove,” he said.
The Seahawks’ offense shut down during a seven-minute stretch, allowing West Valley to jump to a 32-20 lead at the half.
Myron Dews led Cabrillo back at the start of the second half with a 13-2 run and pulled to within a point, 34-33.
That’s as close as the Seahawks came.
“They played better than us, they deserved it,” Seymour said. “We fought hard but we dug ourselves in a hole early on and can never really completely come back from it.”
Alphonse Alfred had a team-high 19 points and six rebounds, while Gabe Mack scored 10 points for the Seahawks.
Women’s basketball
Cabrillo 112, Mission 54: Savanah Quintana-Martin posted a triple-double as the Seahawks defeated the Saints in their Coast Conference South Division finale Friday night.
Quintana-Martin finished with 24 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists for Cabrillo, which recorded a season-high point total.
The Seahawks (14-12, 9-3) finished in second place behind De Anza (18-10, 10-2). Cabrillo will find out this week if it qualified for the NorCal playoffs with an at-large berth.
Kenedi Walters had 23 points and five rebounds, while Michaela Thornton had 16 points and 10 rebounds.
Abbi Saxton, an Aptos High alumna, had a team-high 13 rebounds to go along with five points.
Katelyn Shelton contributed 14 points and Julisa Vega, a Watsonville High alumna, had 11 rebounds and four points.
Cabrillo honored with end-of-year awards: Sophomores Savanah Quintana-Martin and Michaela Thornton were named to the All-Coast Conference South Division First Team.
Quintana-Martin, a Watsonville High alumna, averaged 12.6 points per game, 5.4 rebounds and 5.6 assists per game this season.
Thornton, a Soquel High alumna, averaged 13.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 3.7 assists.
Sophomore Kenedi Walters was named to the all-conference second team. She averaged 10.7 points, 4.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game this season.
Freshmen Anaiah Chavez and Abbi Saxton were both all-conference honorable mention.
College baseball
Santa Rosa 6, Cabrillo 3: Ian Koenig recorded two hits and scored twice as the Seahawks lost to the Bear Cubs in non-conference play Friday.
Anthony Karagiannopoulos had two of Cabrillo’s eight hits.
David Eichhorn (2-1) was credited with a loss, giving up four runs–two earned–on three hits and walking two batters in two innings for Cabrillo (9-4).
The Seahawks play at San Mateo College (9-3) on Tuesday at 2 p.m.
