Tony Nuñez: On a tear-filled night, Watsonville councilwomen Rebecca Garcia and Trina Coffman-Gomez were sworn in as mayor and vice-mayor, respectivley, Tuesday.
Garcia, a Watsonville native who has more than 30 years of experience in politics, replaced Francisco “Paco” Estrada.
Estrada will continue on the council (District 4) through 2022.

Tarmo Hannula: A man was shot late Tuesday night in the Beach Flats area of Santa Cruz near the Beach Boardwalk. At least two shots were reported by multiple witnesses around Third Street at Kaye Street at 9:14 p.m.
An unknown person dropped off the teen male victim at Dominican Hospital and then left the scene.
It was the second shooting in the area since Sunday when someone fired several rounds from a moving car near Cowell’s Beach. No one was hurt in that incident.

Tarmo Hannula: Six people were killed in a wild gun battle that broke out in Jersey City, New Jersey Tuesday. The dead included a police officer, three bystanders and two suspects. Police are looking into whether the shooting was an attack on a Jewish deli.

Tarmo Hannula: A school bus caught fire at Aptos High School around 6:45 a.m. on Mariner Way, the entrance to the campus. Firefighters discovered a fire in a wheel well and quickly tamped it out.

Tarmo Hannula: Light rain fell around the Monterey Bay area Tuesday night and into Wednesday. A cloud cover then sat on the region most of Wednesday. The next rain is on tap for Friday. Mixed clouds and sunshine are being predicted for the weekend, the National Weather Service said.
