A 31-year-old Watsonville man died Friday night when he crashed his motorcycle on Highway 1 in Santa Cruz.

California Highway Patrol officer Sam Courtney said the man, identified as Steven Lovett by Brian Cleveland of the Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office, was riding a 2000 Harley Davidson south on Highway 1 North of Soquel Drive, just before 8 p.m. at a “high speed.” The motorcycle slammed into the rear of a 1998 Toyota Camry driven by a 35-year-old Soquel man.

The impact hurled Lovett into the center divider. He was pronounced dead at the scene, Courtney said.

Drugs or alcohol did not appear to have played a role in the crash, Courtney added.

The incident is still under investigation.

While the initial report from the CHP claimed Lovett was 34, Cleveland updated the age to 31.
