WATSONVILLE—A large gathering of people celebrated the Feast Day of Our Lady of Guadalupe the Virgin Mary Sunday at Pinto Lake County Park.
Based on Catholic tradition, the virgin appeared to a young boy, Juan Diego, in Mexico in 1531. Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe is one of the most revered religious figures in Mexico. Dec. 12, a national holiday in Mexico, marks the 1531 appearance.
Hundreds of people brought flowers, candles and other offerings to the site at the edge of Pinto Lake, the same place where, on June 17, 1992, a woman spotted an image of the Virgin Mary in the bark of an oak tree.
