WATSONVILLE — A water services crew from the City of Watsonville has started up a new wave of the water main improvement project on Marchant Street and surrounding areas.
The project has been ongoing, with sections of neighborhoods all over the city being worked on over the years. City officials estimate that more than 50 percent of water lines in Watsonville are over 50 years old, prompting the much-needed improvements.
“This is an important, much-needed upgrade,” crew supervisor Julian Olvera said. “We’re trying to bring things up to modern standards.”
Olvera explained that the new pipe system is more advanced in that it can detect problems faster and more efficiently. Replacement costs are estimated between $30-$40 million over the course of 10 years.
The construction happening on and around Marchant Street will install one mile of new water main piping, and is expected to take a couple of months to complete. Roads are shut down when work is in progress.
