Water surges through the asphalt along the 300-block of Ford Street Monday afternoon where a man reportedly ran into a fire hydrant with his Chevy Silverado pickup.

Watsonville Police said the man struck the hydrant just after 5pm, triggering a water main break beneath Ford Street. While WPD shut down traffic to the area, a crew from Public Works sped to the scene to shut off the water, which was gushing out at 6,000 gallons per minute.

As a section of Ford Street filled with water, police arrested the driver on suspicion of DUI and for having previous DUIs. As several motorists scurried to move their vehicles out of the flooded areas, workers managed to cut the flow of water and begin mop up.
