WATSONVILLE — Watsonville Police on Tuesday arrested a 17-year-old boy after he allegedly fired a shot into a residence that nearly struck a 3-year-old girl.

According to Watsonville Police spokeswoman Michelle Pulido, the shooting occurred on the 500 block of McKenzie Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday.

The bullet traveled through the house and the path of the bullet was about a foot above from where the toddler was sleeping, Pulido said.

Officers got a description of the suspect, and as they were canvassing the neighborhood, they spotted a teen matching the suspect description.

The teen was arrested less than a block away from the shooting after he allegedly tossed the gun as an officer approached him, Pulido said.

The caliber of the handgun matched a casing located at the scene of the shooting, she said.

The boy was booked into Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall.

Anyone with information is asked to call Detective Juan Sánchez at 768-3358.
