Signage for the new Staff of Life Natural Foods Market has gone up at the front of its new location in East Lake Village Shopping Center in Watsonville. Clark Codiga, who manages the center and many other properties around town, said the store, with its founding sister store on Soquel Avenue in Santa Cruz, is aiming for an early 2021 opening in the former SuperMax (and former, former Lambert’s) building.

A widespread investigation and manhunt is underway following a homicide at a home on the 700 block of Rodriguez Street early Thursday morning.
Police are looking for Cesar Hernandez, 47, as the suspect in the murder of his 24-year-old wife.
The victim’s body was found in a car on Mission Drive in Santa Cruz by Dominican Hospital and the Skyview Drive-In (Flea Market). Some friends of the victim have already set up a GoFUndMe account to help family defray costs.

If you happen to wander along Main Street in Watsonville by the plaza be sure and check out the four wood cutout art installations by Priscilla Martinez. The designs include a catrina, colorful skulls and a mariachi with guitar in hand. They will stand in the plaza facing Main Street until Nov. 2.

I spoke with Anna Schneider, meteorologist at the National Weather Service of Monterey today about the ongoing heat wave, hoping she’d offer some info about cooler weather on its way. It will be cooling off, but not until Sunday. Actually, Schneider said things will start to cool off by 5 to 6 degrees Saturday.
“We’ll be back into the 70s on Sunday,” she said. “The heat advisory has expired and we will experience relief this weekend.”
Schneider added that there is a small craft advisory out on Monterey Bay today and will run into Saturday as well.
“But overall, things are pretty calm,” she said.
