Today is Jackie Robinson Day. Many sports organizations are planning online celebrations of #42 of the Brooklyn Dodgers on the 73-year anniversary commemorating and honoring the day baseball legend Jackie Robinson made his major league debut.
In 1947 Robinson became the first black major league player to step onto the diamond, which ended approximately 80 years of baseball segregation. As Robinson shattered the icy wall of racism in baseball, death threats poured into his mail, racial taunts during games, and a potential strike tainted the historical move.
“Still, Robinson managed to fight through these issues to be named Rookie of the Year and helped lead the Dodgers to the World Series by the season’s end,” one website wrote.

Santa Cruz County officials are planning on lifting closures of all county beaches and parks Thursday after shutting them down for a week to put a lid on people gathering in large numbers during shelter-in-place. The closure was one of several steps to help combat the spread of COVID-19. Santa Cruz County officials are optimistic in that staying at home, closing beaches and parks and social distancing is working. Also, Santa Cruz County officials might lift the county-wide shelter-in-place restriction May 4, an order that began March 17.

Officials at UC Santa Cruz are trying to contact anyone who rode its campus shuttle April 1 or 2 after a driver died from COVID-19. Students or staff who rode the shuttle on these dates, and have had any symptoms or concerns, are asked to call Student Health Services at 831-459-2591 to schedule a telephone visit for risk assessment and possible testing for COVID-19.
Faculty or staff who rode the shuttle and have symptoms or concerns should also contact their healthcare provider and inform them of any possible exposure. Transit records indicate that about 19 people rode that driver’s bus route over the course of the two days; identities of the passengers are unknown.
Chancellor Cynthia Larive released this statement: “We believe this case presents a low risk of exposure to our campus community based on the protocols we instituted on March 17 to slow the spread of COVID-19. Campus shuttle passengers use only the rear entrance of a bus to enter and exit the bus; passengers are separated by at least six feet from the bus driver; and buses are cleaned several times throughout the day by staff.”

In Pennsylvania a 93-year-old woman made the news while being self quarantined. At one point she held up a sign in her front window that read “Need More Beer.” A local Coors Light company (which is the woman’s favorite brand) stepped in and brought her 10 cases of brew with a promise to repeat the measure when she ran out. Olive Veronesi “wasted no time, posing on the front porch with a can of beer and a sign reading, got more beer,” NPR reported.
