Pajaro Valley Unified School District officials have replaced Watsonville High Principal Clara Fernandez, three years after she took the helm of the school.

In her place, Chrissy MacLean will step in as interim principal, says interim Superintendent Murry Schekman.

“MacLean was a teacher and Assistant Principal at WHS, Coordinator of Counseling Services at the District Office and enjoys a background in counseling in leadership,” Schekman stated in a letter to the community.

Schekman did not discuss the reasons for the decision, citing employee confidentiality.

Fernandez will be serving as Principal on Special Assignment, which Schekman says will allow her to provide leadership and support at a variety of district sites throughout the year.

The district will now advertise for a permanent principal, an effort Schekman says will be community-based.

“I will ensure that the staff and community of WHS will be involved in the selection process of the next

principal,” he stated.

Schekman served as WHS principal from 2006-2010.
