Preps of the Week
Boys: St. Francis High’s Mason Borrego batted 3-for-3 and scored a pair of runs for the Sharks’ baseball team in its 7-1 win against Scotts Valley High in non-league action on March 3. He also recorded one RBI and drew one walk for St. Francis (1-0), which will begin Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division play at Hollister on Wednesday at 3:30pm.
Girls: Monte Vista Christian senior Courtney Miller recorded four goals and a pair of assists for the Mustangs girls’ lacrosse team in its 14-1 win against Pioneer High in non-league play March 3. She added two more goals in a 12-8 win over Carmel High on Monday, giving her a total of 21 goals this season for MVC (5-0), which will host a tough Stevenson squad on Wednesday at 4pm.
Rising Stars
- Aptos High senior outside hitter Jackson Miller finished with five kills, two aces, two blocks and five digs for the Mariners boys’ volleyball team in a four set loss (25-18, 22-25, 25-13, 25-18) to Carmel High in non-league action March 2.
- Monte Vista Christian junior Kyra Driscoll recorded a pair of goals and had four draw controls for the Mustangs girls’ lacrosse team in its 14-1 win against Pioneer High in non-league play March 3.
- North Monterey County High junior Ariyah Morgan had a multi-hit game and an outstanding defensive performance for the Condors softball team in its 4-2 win over Pacific Grove in non-league action March 3. Junior infielder Les Ruiz recorded a home run, while senior pitcher Ame Visesio finished with six strikeouts in the pitcher’s circle for the complete game victory.
- Scotts Valley senior Elin Bray-Zoreque had two hits for the Falcons baseball team in its 7-4 loss to Santa Clara High in non-league play March 4. Fellow junior teammate Quinn Turowski made six plays on defense with no errors at third base.
- St. Francis High’s Mariella Guevara won the 100 yard butterfly and 500 freestyle for the Sharks girls’ swim team in a 96-60 loss to Notre Dame of Salinas in non-league action March 3. Mia Guardino won the 100 backstroke, while Mariella joined fellow teammates Victoria Howe, Alyssa McDaniel and Jacoba Taylor to win the 200 yard freestyle relay.
- St. Francis High’s Sam Galvan notched a win in the 500 yard freestyle for the Sharks boys’ swim team in its 84-42 loss to Palma in non-league action March 3.
- Watsonville High junior Aiden Rodriguez batted 1-for-3 and recorded a pair of RBIs for the Wildcatz baseball team in its 3-1 win over Greenfield in non-league action on March 3. Sophomore pitcher Rudy Valdez recorded three strikeouts and gave up one run on five hits over five innings in the win for Watsonville. Fellow teammate Josh Ybarra was in for two innings in relief out of the bullpen, recording the final six outs to earn the save for the ‘Catz (2-1), who play at North Monterey County on Thursday at 3:30pm.
Games of the Week
- St. Francis vs. Hollister, baseball, Friday at 3:30pm: The Sharks (1-0) will dive into the grueling PCAL Gabilan Division season starting with the defending league champion Haybalers (3-0), who had a strong showing at the Wilcox Charger Classic. St. Francis is coming off a spectacular season after winning the PCAL Mission Division and a Central Coast Section Division IV title.
- Watsonville vs. Summerville, baseball, Friday at 5pm: The Wildcatz (2-1) are hosting the Bears (0-1) who will make the three hour trek from Tuolumne, which is about 50 miles northwest of Yosemite National Park. Summerville competes in the Mother Lode League in the CIF Sac Joaquin Section.
- Watsonville Wildcatz Tournament, boys volleyball, all day on Saturday: The Wildcatz–reigning champion of the PCAL Mission Division–will host an all day tournament at Watsonville High School that will feature schools such as Alvarez, Monterey, Palma and Scotts Valley.
