Emergency workers team up to extricate a female passenger from a caved-in pickup on the 2900 block of Freedom Boulevard Friday.

California Highway Patrol officer Michael Matildi said the male driver of a white GMC  Sierra Denali pickup was traveling north on Freedom Boulevard at 4:15pm. For unknown reasons he swerved and smashed head-on into a black GMC Sierra pickup that was traveling south on Freedom Boulevard with a male driver and a female passenger, both of Watsonville. Firefighters from Watsonville Fire and CalFire had to use the Jaws of Life to extricate the Watsonville couple from their mangled truck. They were both flown to out of country trauma centers by CALSTAR air ambulances with major injuries. Freedom Boulevard was shut down for more than an hour. The incident is still under investigation.
