The killing of five newspaper journalists recently in Maryland caused me to think of the time I, as the co-owner of the Paradise POST, a tri-weekly newspaper in Northern California, had to fire my editor-publisher for cause in 1991, and what I’m certain he then did in retribution.

The UN’s October Climate warning is terrifying. We need profound changes in the next 10-12 years to build a more equitable world and sustain life as we know it. News of increasingly destructive, deadly California forest fires offer a grim vision of how continuing with “business as usual” might impact us locally.

With a 7.1 magnitude earthquake killing more than 300 people in Mexico last week, and an 8.1 magnitude quake striking the southern end of the country earlier in the month, killing nearly 100, a sense of dread is rising throughout California.
