SANTA CRUZ — New Music Works (NMW) will join forces with acclaimed pianist and vocalist Terry Riley for a performance on Feb. 2.
Riley is known as a pioneer of minimalist classical music, integrating classical Indian music concepts and techniques. His career spans decades, leading the development of the genre since the 1960s.
On Feb. 2 Riley will join NMW for the ensemble’s second concert of the season. The lineup includes selected works by Riley himself, as well as “Going Places” by NMW’s conductor Phil Collins, and Frederic Rzewski’s “To the Earth.”
The NMW ensemble will perform along with Riley’s vocals and piano. Eighteen-year-old Alice Jen will make her NMW debut alongside Sarah Cahill, premiering “Going Places.” Other performers include Regina Meyers, performing Riley’s four-hand piano piece, “Waltz for Charismas” with Cahill, and Henry Wilson will be featured on voice and percussion (flower pots) for “To the Earth.”
The concert will be held at Peace United Church of Christ, 900 High St. in Santa Cruz. A special pre-show talk with Riley, Cahill and Collins is planned to begin at 6 p.m., and music begins at 7:30 p.m.
Tickets are $28.94 for general admission, $13.41 for students and $39.29 for special Golden Seating. Additional service fees are included in these prices.
