CAPITOLA—Two people—one of them a 17-year-old girl—were arrested late Tuesday night after allegedly participating in a race on Highway 1 while drunk.

According to Courtney, CHP officers patrolling on Highway 1 stopped two vehicles that were racing at more than 100 miles per hour around midnight in Capitola.

Juan Serna Cabrales, 22, was charged with DUI. He was not in custody late Wednesday morning, jail records showed. The juvenile, who was driving with several teenage passengers, was also cited for DUI, Courtney said.

“This is a sobering reminder and that reckless and distracted driving continues to be a leading cause of death for teens in America,” Courtney stated in a press release. “The outcome could have been very different.”
