FREEDOM—A Freedom man was arrested Saturday after a bullet he fired during a July 4 celebration ricocheted off the ground and entered a nearby residence, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s spokeswoman Ashley Keehn said.

The bullet came within inches of a 10-year-old girl in her Miller Avenue home, Keehn said.

Douglas Paz was charged with negligent discharge of a firearm and resisting arrest. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail, but was not in custody Monday, jail records showed.

Sheriff’s deputies responded to a call of a bullet into a home on Miller Avenue at about 9pm. According to Keehn, Paz was firing into the ground to celebrate the holiday. Investigators recovered three firearms from Paz’ residence, including the revolver that was used.
