The Pajaro Valley High Grizzlies volleyball team won in three sets, 25-10, 25-10, 25-15, against North Monterey County High on the road Tuesday night.

The Grizzlies’ Natalia Arroyo had 14 points on serve, and Julie Che and Kayla Salazar each added 10 apiece.

Salazar also had seven aces, while Che and Arroyo both chipped in six. Che also finished the game with 12 kills.

Pajaro Valley High (6-4) defeated Gonzales High on Thursday night, 25-16, 18-25, 25-9, 25-21.

Kayla Salazar scored 15 points on serve, and Julie Che, Natalia Arroyo and Michelle Ibarra all posted nine.

Che led the way with 21 kills, and Salazar was the assist leader with 39.

• Wildcatz win Silver Division – Watsonville High School beat Pacific Grove High and Scotts Valley High to win the Silver Division at the Watsonville High School Tournament on Saturday.

GIRLS TENNIS

• M.V.C. falls in season-opener – The Monte Vista Christian Mustangs fell 5-2 against Everett Alvarez in its Pacific Mission Division season opener on Tuesday.

The Mustangs’ Mea Alvarez won the opening singles match against Kayleigh Bajarin 6-4, 6-4. M.V.C.’s Aiyanr Barlesa also won her match against Kendall Fournier, 9-5, 6-1.

The Mustangs fell to Alisal High 4-3 on Thursday. Bajarin, Hannah Snyder and Fournier won their singles matches.

BOYS WATER POLO

• Santa Cruz 13, Aptos 3 – The Aptos High School Mariners fell to Santa Cruz High at home Monday.

Aptos’ (0-1) Makay Sheeper scored a goal, and goalie Aidan Gilbert made eight saves.

On Wednesday, the Mariners fell 12-6 to Soquel High at Cabrillo College.

Aptos’ Matthew Morse had two goals. Goalies Kye Hurley and Aiden Gilbert combined to block nine shot attempts.

GIRLS WATER POLO

• Aptos 8, Santa Cruz 2 – Aptos High used a stifling defense to defeat Santa Cruz High, 8-2, on Monday. 

Goalie Bella Stephens collected eight saves while Kristin Malone scored four goals to lead the Mariners to the win in their season opener.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

• M.V.C places seventh – Monte Vista Christian finished seventh in the Chieftain-Spirit Classic on Saturday at Toro Park in Salinas.

Jinghao Wang paced the Mustangs with a time of 18 minutes and 11 seconds, placing 26th in the three-mile course. Fellow Mustangs Justin Lomeli (33rd), Samuel Bautista (34th), Rafael Gomez (74th), Jordan Olhava (97th), Andrew Bachman (102nd) and Cameron Chetcuti (103rd) also placed.

North Monterey County High finished 10th in the meet. Jiovanni Garcia led the Condors with a time of 18 minutes and 15 seconds, placing 27th. Anthony Macias (47th), Arrell Calo (70th), Vinicius Melone (82nd), Bernabe Munoz (86th), Wyatt Ramos (94th) and Diego Villegas (95th) also placed.

Josiah Sweet led Aptos High with a time of 18 minutes and 10 seconds.

• Locals compete in Lowell Invitational – Jesus Alvarez was the top Watsonville High finisher at the Lowell Invitational at Golden Gate Park on Saturday, placing 93rd with a time of 16 minutes 52 seconds on the 2.93-mile course.

Fellow Watsonville teammates Damian Rivas (125th) and Sebastian Abonce (162nd) also placed.

GIRLS CROSS COUNTRY

• N.M.C. finishes ninth – North Monterey County High placed ninth in the Chieftain-Spirit Classic on Saturday at Toro Park in Salinas.

Faith Mora led the Condors with a time of 21 minutes and eight seconds in the three-mile course, finishing 17th.

Fellow Condors Andrea Villegas (21st), Daniela Munoz (59th), Ana Perez (68th), Brianda Ortiz (71st), Evelyn Gutierrez (74th) and Jahaira Rivera (94th) also placed.

Camryn Ryan led St. Francis High School with a time of 23 minutes and 5 seconds. Teammate Riley Croghan finished close behind at 23 minutes and 7 seconds.

• Watsonville High’s Yaviana Prado placed 125th with a time of 21 minutes and 59 seconds, and Carolina Avalos placed 147th in the Lowell Invitational at Golden Gate Park on Saturday.

MENS BASKETBALL

• Sunday night league underway – Six games have already been played for the Sunday Night Basketball League Recreation, held weekly at Pajaro Valley High School.

In game 1, the Drivers defeated the Hoop Platon 60-56. The Drivers’ Xanders Bowers and Diego Bracho scored 20 and 10 points, respectively. Chris Quintero of Hoop Platon scored 18, while Brian Gallardo chipped in 11.

The Victory were victorious versus the Lakers in game 2, 56-32. The Victory’s Rey Escobar scored 17 points, while Jonny Chavez had 11.

In game 3, Hoop Platon beat The Crusadas 80-62. Hoop Platon’s Chris Quintero had 30 points, while Brian Gallardo and Juan Lira each scored 11. The Crusadas’ Oscar Gonzales had 24 points.

The Crusadas fell to Victory in game 4, 88-65. For the Victory, Rey Escobar and Victor Hernandez both scored 15 points, while Oscar Ortis and Jonny Chavez each had 14 points. Jellen Carreon scored 13. Just as in his previous game, The Crusadas’ Oscar Gonzales scored 24.

Luminair defeated the Drivers 97-90 in game 5. Luminair’s Smithy B. had 32 points, while Luiz Arnold had 21. The Drivers’ Xander Bowers and Rex Ward each netted 24 points, while Diego Bracho chipped in 11.

Hoop Platon routed the Lakers in game 6, 105-31. Hoop Platon’s Cris Quintero had 48 points, while Brian Gallardo scored 22, Juan Lira, 20, and Steve Renteria, 10. For the Lakers, Alexis Muros had 14 points.
