WATSONVILLE—A man driving on southbound Highway 1 early Monday afternoon was arrested after an altercation that ended when his passenger was shot in the face, California Highway Patrol Officer Sam Courtney said.

Michael Stuckey, 48, from Port Orchard, Wash., was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail. He was not in custody on Monday night, jail records showed.

According to Courtney, Stuckey was driving a 2013 Toyota Tacoma south on southbound Highway 1 north of Riverside Drive at about 8:14am when he had an “altercation” with his passenger. During the altercation, the Toyota collided with a guardrail and the passenger was shot in the face with a handgun.

Drug impairment appears to have contributed to the collision, Courtney said.

The incident is being investigated by CHP, and the Santa Cruz County Sheriffs’ office is conducting the shooting portion of the investigation. Southbound Highway 1 was closed during the investigation, and reopened at 12:30pm.

There were two male adults in the vehicle, Courtney said.
