Tarmo Hannula: There was a 3.9 earthquake centered in Morgan Hill last night. I was in bed reading when suddenly it felt like a truck bumped into my house. It hit at 11:16 p.m. The United State Geological Survey said it reached Santa Cruz, Watsonville and Salinas.

On New Year’s Day I rode my bicycle to the west side of Santa Cruz because I heard there were huge waves, along with a surf advisory and warnings of deadly “sneaker waves” from the National Weather Service. There were almost no waves, though there were huge crowds out there watching and waiting for them. But I enjoyed riding my bike along West Cliff, which was packed with people like me taking in the relaxation of the holiday, plenty of sunshine and mild condition.

There were two more cars hit by flying mysterious projectiles in Prunedale. The random attacks were reported at 7:30 p.m. Monday within minutes of each other. The California Highway Patrol believes the same person or persons are responsible because they happened within such a narrow time frame. The vehicles, a motorhome and a sedan, were hit on Highway 101, the first near the San Miguel exit, the other near San Juan Road. No injuries were reported. The cases bring the number of attacks to 67 since February 2019. Thanks to two law agencies and a private citizen, there is a $1,500 reward for anyone providing information that leads to the arrest of the suspect or suspects.
