Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday is expected to announce the closure of all beaches and state parks starting Friday, multiple national news agencies reported late Wednesday night.

The news comes days after Gov. Newsom expressed concern over numerous photos of people crowding beaches throughout the state surfaced over a sun-soaked weekend.

A memo from the California Police Chiefs Association sent to law enforcement agencies throughout the state ahead of Newsom’s announcement said that State Parks personnel will help support local efforts to enforce the closure.

“We wanted to give all our members a heads up about this in order to provide time for you to plan for any situations you might expect as a result, knowing each community has its own dynamics,” the memo read.

Santa Cruz County Health Officer Dr. Gail Newel on Wednesday issued new restrictions on the county’s beaches, halting their use between 11am and 5 pm starting on Saturday.

The Governor’s order is expected to supersede the county’s.
