A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Cabrillo College kicked off the graduation season on May 19.
This week, graduations are shifting into a high gear.
Sixteen high and middle schools from across the Pajaro Valley Unified School District will hold their commencement ceremonies this week, including seven on Thursday.
On Saturday, the Pajaronian is publishing our annual graduation section, featuring stories and photos from more than 10 schools in the area. We’ll be focusing on a few graduates from each school and highlighting their journey to their diplomas and degrees, and where they will be going from here.
I had the opportunity to speak with Cabrillo College graduate Dinesh Priyal, a 10-year resident of Santa Cruz County who earned his degree in culinary arts and hospitality management. Originally from Sri Lanka, Dinesh is extremely passionate in his drive to open a farm to table restaurant, and pass down his knowledge to others hoping to get their foot in the culinary world.
You’ll read about him and other graduates in the section.
Congratulations to all who are graduating this year.

I’m always impressed by Pajaro Valley Arts’ annual “Sculpture IS” exhibit at Sierra Azul Nursery and Gardens. It’s easy to get lost in the two-acre gardens, with sculptures seemingly “growing” out of a variety of plants and bright colors standing out in contrast to lush green leaves.
Some sculptures tower over you, while others you have to get down on your knees to truly appreciate.
And the exhibit is up year-round, with Sierra Azul owner Jeff Rosendale purchasing pieces for the gardens’ permanent collection. He told me that art is one of the best investments you can make with your money, as it will last for generations to come.
An opening reception for “Sculpture IS” will take place on June 29 from 5-7 p.m. at 2660 East Lake Ave. in Watsonville.
Pajaro Valley Arts is always busy in their mission to bring art into the world. Their latest exhibit, “Color!”, opens Wednesday, featuring work by PVA members.
