I sure welcome the cooler weather. Heavy fog rolled in Sunday afternoon in Santa Cruz and hung around through the morning, dropping temps significantly from the past several days. The sun broke through in Watsonville for part of the day but the fog won out by the late afternoon. Meteorologists say we are still getting slightly above average temperatures, but temps will settle back to a norm by the end of the week.

On Tuesday the second phase of the massive mosaic mural on the side of the 6-floor parking structure on the corner of Rodriguez and West Beach streets will be unveiled. Work gets going at 7am and there will be some form of ceremony around 4 pm. If you’re not busy I think it would be worth the time to swing by and watch the action unfolding.

Alarming numbers of Covid-19 are piling up around the world. The worldwide count of cases, as of 5 pm Monday, now tops 40.3 million. This morning it was 40.1. California has 878,000 cases. Officials said there were 70,000 new cases in a week in Europe. Monterey County has 11,091 cases and 83 deaths. San Benito County has 1,401 cases and 14 deaths. Santa Cruz County reports 2,706 cases and 23 deaths. Four percent of North Dakota’s population have the virus and Wisconsin has now been labelled as a crisis. Health workers there built an emergency field hospital at the fairgrounds in order to just deal with Cobid-19 cases with dozens of isolated stalls with beds.
President Trump is on the attack against top disease experts, including Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert, who is on the president’s coronavirus task force, even calling him “an idiot” at a press conference. More than 220,000 people have died in the U.S. while Trump repeatedly tells his cheering fans that the country has “come around the corner” in the battle against the disease.

I stopped by Crystal Bay Farm on Zils Road this morning and was delighted by their amazing pumpkin patch, a dramatic Halloween-themed garden they set up every year. Thousands of kids have visited the spot, just off of San Andreas Road. Things are a little different there now because of Covid, but I spotted a group of parents and kids out there this morning enjoying the huge display of pumpkins, other various guards, skulls, witches, skeletons, fake rats, and other spooky goodies.

The World Series kicks off Tuesday evening with game 1 just after 5pm between Los Angeles Dodgers and the Tampa Bay Rays.
