WATSONVILLE—Watsonville firefighters responded to a fire Friday afternoon that seriously damaged a home and displaced one resident.

It is unclear what caused the blaze, which started around 1:15 p.m. at 11 Jeanette Way.

Mike Vaz said he has lived in the house more than 30 years. He said he went to the store and returned to see a large column of black smoke.

“I had a feeling it was my house,” he said.

It was not Vaz’s first tragedy. He said his son died in September.

“All of his pictures were in there,” he said.

Watsonville Fire Department, Cal Fire and North Monterey County fire departments and American Medical Response responded to the fire.

Kirt Vojvoda, Division Chief with Watsonville Fire, said there were no injuries in the single-story blaze that sent a towering column of black smoke into the sky.
