Dutra announces candidacy for Watsonville City Council

WATSONVILLE—Election season has officially begun.

Former Watsonville City Councilman Jimmy Dutra is again running for office in his home city, announcing on Saturday morning through Facebook that he will run for the City Council seat in District 6.

“I’m ready to roll up my sleeves and get back to work and I need your help and your support,” he said in the video announcement.

Dutra served on the council from 2014-18 before running unsuccessfully for Santa Cruz County Supervisor in the 4th District against incumbent Greg Caput, who is currently serving his third term.

Currently, Mayor Pro-Tempore Trina Coffman-Gomez represents District 6, which covers several streets off Freedom Boulevard on the east side of the city. Coffman-Gomez will be termed out in November.

The winner of the District 6 race will be Mayor next year.

“Right now, it’s the time that we need experience and we need leadership that’s going to be there for everybody,” he said. “I promise you to be that person.”

City Council seats in District 1 and 2 will also be on the November ballot.

Councilman Felipe Hernandez will also be termed out in November in District 1. Councilman Aurelio Gonzalez in District 2, however, can seek reelection.

The nomination period will run until Aug. 7.
