County Clerk offering Watsonville office hours
WATSONVILLE — The County Clerk will hold its monthly office hours in Watsonville on Wednesday for people who are applying for passports, marriage licenses, or fictitious business names; getting married; being sworn in as a Deputy Commissioner of Marriage; obtaining a health officer verification; or registering as a notary.
The hours are from 7:50 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the City Clerk’s Office located at 275 Main St., fourth floor (sixth floor of the parking garage).
The County Clerk offers office hours in Watsonville one Wednesday each month in an effort to make clerk services more accessible for South County residents.
“Offering our services to our South County residents at a nearby location is a great service for those who would otherwise have to make a special trip to the County Government Center in Santa Cruz to have their wedding ceremony, apply for a passport or file a fictitious business name,” County Clerk Gail Pellerin said.

WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville Senior Center, 114 East Fifth St., will hold a yard sale on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

First entry deadlines near for county fair
WATSONVILLE — Four of the many departments at the annual Santa Cruz County Fair have deadlines on Saturday.
Those interested in Homebrew, Livestock, Poultry and Poetry are encouraged to visit the Fair’s website for entry details and forms.
There are early receiving drop off points available through Friday at Seabright Brewery in Santa Cruz and Fermentation Solutions in Campbell for entries into the Homebrew section. Poultry and Poetry entries must be received by the Fair office by Saturday with Livestock entries to be completed online by the same deadline.

Health fair highlights importance of breastfeeding
WATSONVILLE — The 11th annual Breastfeeding Health Fair and Walk will return to the Watsonville Plaza on Friday from 3-6 p.m.
Hosted by the Community Bridges Women, Infants & Children (WIC) Nutrition Program, the event includes family activities, a live DJ, community resource booths, healthy snacks, free T-shirts, raffles and more.
This event supports the City of Watsonville’s resolution that proclaims August as Breastfeeding Awareness Month.
A rally-type walk down Main Street will begin at 5 p.m.
The Community Bridges WIC Program serves nearly 600 pregnant women each month. Most are mono-lingual Spanish speakers who work in the agriculture industry.

Memoir writing class ongoing at library
WATSONVILLE — A memoir writing class is held Thursdays through Nov. 30 in the Watsonville Library Conference Room, second floor, 275 Main St.
Held from 6-7:45 p.m., the free group is open to both beginning and experienced writers. The group, led by Elizabeth Munroz, includes exercises and the opportunity to share your writing and receive feedback.

Registration opening for Birding Festival
WATSONVILLE — Registration opens on Friday at 8 a.m. for the Monterey Bay Birding Festival.
The 13th annual festival will take place on Sept. 23, featuring field trips, workshops, a documentary film screening, “A Taste of the Pajaro Valley” reception, and the keynote presentation by ornithologist and marine biologist Peter Pyle.
Attendees will start the day with field trips led by local birding experts, then convene in the afternoon for the “Adventures in Molt” workshop by Peter Pyle. Maya Khosla will show her documentary film, “Searching for the Goldspot — the Wild after Wildfire,” followed by “A Taste of the Pajaro Valley” reception, where local delicacies will be served. The finale is Peter Pyle’s evening presentation entitled “Ecology and Conservation of the Gulf of the Farallones.”

San Benito County schools announce free, reduced-price meal policy
AROMAS — School districts in San Benito County, including Aromas/San Juan Schools, have announced their policy for providing free and reduced-price meals for children served under the National School Lunch Program and/or School Breakfast Program.
Each school has a copy of the policy, which may be reviewed by any interested party on request.
Meal applications will be sent to all households with a letter informing parents or guardians of the availability of free and reduced-price meals. To apply, complete one application for all children in the household and submit to the school for processing. In addition, schools mail home applications to all students. Households may submit an application at any time during the school year.
The school will notify the household of their children’s eligibility for free meals if any household member receives CalFresh, California Work Opportunity and Responsibility for Kids, or Food Distribution Program Indian Reservations benefits.
Households that did not receive the eligibility notice from school officials and would like to apply for meal benefits must submit an application to determine a child’s eligibility.

Artists sought for annual plein air competition
CAPITOLA — Registration is now open for the third annual Capitola Plein Air juried competition, exhibition and sale.
The event, taking place from Nov. 1-5, includes four days of painting, an artists’ mixer, and an indoor exhibition and competition judged by artist Laurie Kersey. More than $2,500 in prizes will be handed out.
