Tarmo Hannula/The Pajaronian Bryan Love has been with New School for 14 years.

New School Community Day School teacher Bryan Love left a 20-year career in sales and business 14 years ago after a family emergency forced him to take some time off.

After working as a substitute for just four days, Love found his new place at the alternative high school when then principal Victoria Sorenson convinced him to go through a credential program.

“I’ve been here ever since,” he said Monday, as he worked on the school’s garden with a group of students. “I am so blessed and grateful to be matched up with New School, because it’s just the perfect place for me. It’s made me a better person and helped me reach my potential as a human.”

Love was named teacher of the year by the Santa Cruz County Office of Education (COE), the office announced Monday in a press release.

He teaches science, biology and physical education. He also created the school’s Outdoor School & Character Development program, now in its seventh year.

He also coaches beach volleyball, basketball, soccer and flag football, and has led the New School Aztecs to 14 Monterey Bay Alternative Schools Athletics League championships.

The fact that he did not have a science background did not deter Love from teaching the classes.

“I think it  has really worked to my benefit, because my mottos are learn by doing, let’s learn it together by necessity and !No Aburrimiento Permitido! (No Boredom Allowed!)”

Joandry Gomez, a junior at the school, said that Love has such a connection with students that he thinks of him as an uncle.

“He’s a great human being,” Gomez said. “He is so loving and caring, he is one of those teachers I am going to remember. He is honestly amazing.”

The COE also named Pacific Elementary School District After School Program Coordinator Jennifer Konicke as classified employee of the year, Mission Hill Middle School social emotional counselor Soledad Hess as counselor of the year.

“Each of these outstanding honorees has shown unwavering dedication and support for students’ success, both in and out of the classroom,” County Superintendent of Schools Faris stated in a press release. “It is a privilege to recognize these exemplary educators and partners whose knowledge, passion, and values serve as a source of inspiration for our entire school community.”
