First United Methodist Church celebrating 170th
Watsonville First United Methodist Church is celebrating 170 years on Oct. 22. A church service and luncheon will mark the occasion.
The congregation was established when Rev. D.A. Dryden conducted a marriage ceremony on the banks of the Pajaro River in 1852. This was believed to be the first American wedding in the Pajaro Valley. Soon, a sanctuary was built on Main Street.
In 1873, a church at Third and Rodriguez streets served members until 1954. The current location at 229 Stanford St. has been used since that time.
Freedom Community Methodist Church combined with Watsonville FUMC in 1998.
The current pastor is Rev. John Song.

Soroptimist Fall Fantasy to be held Oct. 29
The Soroptimist Club of Watsonville will hold its Fall Fantasy fundraiser on Oct. 29 from 5:30-9pm at Seascape Golf Club, 610 Clubhouse Drive in Aptos.
The event includes a champagne greeting, hors d’oeuvres, dinner, live entertainment by The Ville, silent auction, live auction emceed by Rod Caborn and more.
All proceeds benefit the Soroptimist club’s scholarship and awards programs along with educational programs for junior high school girls.
