Cabrillo celebrates Hispanic Serving Institution designation
Cabrillo College is celebrating its designation as an Hispanic Serving Institution with a variety of events.
VAPA Voices Day will be held on Sept. 11 from noon to 2pm at the Aptos amphitheater. The event features free food, workshops and entertainment showcasing the VAPA program.
STEM Voices takes place Sept. 12 from noon to 4pm at the Aptos amphitheater, featuring cultural workshops and free food.
A community breakfast with President Matt Wetstein will be held Sept. 13 from 8-9:30am at the Aptos cafeteria.
Poets, artists and musicians will gather on Sept. 13 from 11:30am to 1pm at the Watsonville Center breezeway, between buildings A and B.
Author and educator Gina Garcia will lead the workshop “Empowering Student Voices at HSIs” on Sept. 14 in Watsonville from 12:30-1:30pm and Aptos from 2-3pm. A reception will be held from 5-6pm in Aptos.
Live music and entertainment will be presented at the Watsonville Plaza on Sept. 15 from 5-7pm.
“El Rey del Barrio, con Tin-Tan” will be screened at the Watsonville Center on Sept. 16 at 7:30pm.

Cabrillo president to speak at Rotary meeting
Matt Wetstein, president of Cabrillo College, is scheduled to speak at the Rotary Club of Watsonville during the club’s weekly meeting on Sept. 13.
The meeting takes place at the Elks Lodge, 121 Martinelli St., and begins at 12:15pm.
Guests are invited to join.
Mark Levy to perform and Whiskey Hills Farms
Singer/songwriter Mark Levy will perform Sept. 17 at Whiskey Hill Farms in Watsonville.
Levy offers a repertoire from political satire to older Judaic folk music, jazz and klezmer.
The event is at 371 Calabasas Road. Whiskey Hill Farms is a 14-acre organic farm that cultivates specialty crops, including tropical fruit, rare culinary and medicinal plants, and heirloom vegetable varieties in the off-season.
A potluck begins at 1pm, with the concert starting at 2pm.
Applications now open for Elks scholarships
The Elks National Foundation recently announced the start of the 2024 Elks Most Valuable Student scholarship contest.
The scholarship is available to high school seniors who are United States citizens. Applicants do not need to be related to a member of the Elks.
The application is completed online and must be submitted by Nov. 13.
The 500 national winners will be announced in April. The top 20 national finalists will participate in the Leadership Weekend in Chicago and receive $30,000 scholarships. The remaining 480 runners-up will receive $4,000 scholarships.
