I covered a shooting in Santa Cruz yesterday by Dominican Hospital. Witnesses said it was a young Latino male. They said they heard three of four shots and then saw a black BMW sedan tear away. The Sheriff’s Office said it appears the victim will survive. Add to that two homicides in Watsonville since Jan. 1 and it stacks up to a bad start for the New Year.

Every time I cruise past the new Starbucks coffee place on Lee Road by the Hampton Inn & Suites (still being built) there is a long line at the drive-thru. Being right off of Highway 1, it’s an easy target for those on the road.

The Watsonville phase of the Coastal Rail Trail is taking shape. It runs off of Ohlone Parkway near the Second Harvest Food Bank. In Santa Cruz the first phase officially opened a few weeks ago. I’ve ridden my bike on it a few times and I really think they’ve done a great job. There’s loads of room for pedestrians, wheel chairs, strollers and more.

Get ready for the next big drive-thru event at the fairgrounds:Â A drive-thru Crab Feed. Because of the pandemic, it will be take-home only. Go to fairgrounds-foundation.org for information.Â

The first drive-thru event was Holiday Lights, a ½ mile drive-thru of dazzling Christmas displays, which I’ve learned was an enormous success and a launchpad for the other events.
