Susumu “Sus” Nagai of Watsonville died on Friday, July 13, 2018 after a brief illness. He was 81.

Born on Jan. 24, 1937 in Los Angeles, he lived in Watsonville with his wife of 48 years, Janice (Strong) Nagai. He graduated from Watsonville High School and Hartnell College with honors, and served in the National Guard.

His hobbies included spending time outdoors with family and friends, and among his favorite places were Pismo Beach and Yosemite. He was a member of the Watsonville Road Angels classic car club and the Santa Cruz 4 Wheel Drive Club. He was an engineer in the agriculture and cold storage industry, and retired with the City of Watsonville Wastewater Treatment Facility.

Mr. Nagai is survived by wife, Janice; children, Judy Nagai and Sherri Hermosillo (Todd); two grandchildren; and brothers, Atushi “A.P.” and Shigeru “Sam” Nagai. He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Kisaburo and Hatsuno Nagai; siblings, Tsutomu, Shinobu, Megumi, Masaru, and Yutaka Nagai; and Kyotada Ohira. 

A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Aug. 11, 10 a.m. at the Watsonville Elks Lodge. In lieu of flowers, gifts to the Friends of Watsonville Animal Shelter (FOWAS) are appreciated.
