APTOS — Meghan Roth came to Seacliff Beach Friday afternoon for her daily walk, but also to see what damage the recent high surf wrought on the shore.

The waves tossed up piles of sticks, seaweed and logs, the flotsam and jetsam common after such an event, and precisely what Roth collects for sculptures and other crafts.

“This is like an outdoor craft store,” she said.

The swells that pounded the coast may not be over.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association warned Friday that hazardous surf conditions could last through the weekend, with westerly swells as large as 20 feet possible.

The high surf warning indicates that dangerous, battering waves could hammer the shoreline, resulting in potentially deadly rip currents.

The Santa Cruz Harbormaster issued a high surf advisory for the Small Craft Harbor, and told boaters to secure their boats and prepare their bilge pumps.

Emergency dispatchers on Wednesday and Thursday fielded five emergency calls for water rescues, two of which were false alarms. One person was taken to Dominican Hospital, according to Stephanie French, operations division manager at Netcom.
