You may have noticed some new bylines in the Pajaronian recently. This summer, we have brought on three editorial interns who are learning the ropes of news writing.
• Abigail Acosta, who recently graduated from Monte Vista Christian School, has returned after interning at the R-P last fall. She is currently attending Cabrillo College, majoring in English.
• Gabe Ares is spending his summer with us after completing his first year at Cornell University in New York. A Pacific Collegiate School graduate, Gabe is studying history at Cornell.
• Chanel Escobar is studying journalism at Cabrillo College, and chose the R-P to gain experience in the field through Cabrillo’s work study program.
As interns, the three are working on smaller items for the newspaper, such as briefs, calendar entries, police logs and more. As they become more familiar with the style of news writing, we will assign them stories that require them to go out in the field and conduct interviews.
As a former R-P intern myself from October 2011 to January 2012, I can vouch for the important role internships play for job seekers. The experience you gain is invaluable, and helps build confidence in yourself as you learn your strengths and how to improve on your weaknesses.

I attended American Hat Makers’ hat giveaway on Thursday, and witnessed the support the community has for this growing Watsonville business. The line nearly spilled out of the parking lot, and about 500 hats were expected to be given away.
The annual event is part of Hat Day in the Sun, a national public awareness campaign to educate people about how the right headwear can protect against skin cancer, sun damage and premature aging.
I am always impressed by the quality of American Hat Makers’ products, and I walked away with a stylish hat that I’ll definitely be donning frequently in the near future.
Ironically, though, after waiting for more than an hour in line for an event that is about preventing skin cancer, I came home that night with a fierce sunburn. I’ll be more prepared next time.
