This week’s edition of the Pajaronian Sports Ticker highlights local prep athletes for their performances during the week of April 22-28.
Preps of the Week
Boys: St. Francis High junior Javier Fonseca batted 4-for-5 with two runs scored and three RBIs for the Sharks in a 14-9 victory over Carmel High in Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division baseball action April 24. He also had two hits, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs in an 11-5 win over Hollister High in league play April 22.
Girls: Monte Vista Christian junior Kayla Fullalove-Silveira recorded seven hits, including two home runs, one triple, one double, 10 RBIs, seven runs scored, two stolen bases and one walk in three games for the Mustangs softball team. Fullalove-Silveira had two home runs and five RBIs in a 19-7 non-league win over Soquel High on April 22.
Rising Stars
- Aptos High senior Mileena Carbajal gave up four hits while recording seven strikeouts in five innings pitched for the Mariners in a 9-0 win over Santa Cruz High in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play April 23. Carbajal also had two doubles and four RBIs. Fellow teammate Bailey Fulton batted 4-for-4 with a pair of runs scored, and both Raegan Fulton and Makenzie Lashley each had one double and one run scored.
- St. Francis High senior pitcher Junior Ibarra recorded four strikeouts in three innings of work on the mound for the Sharks in a 4-3 win against Salinas High in PCAL Gabilan baseball action April 26. Micah Cervantes had one hit and scored twice, while Evan Dyer had two strikeouts and allowed three earned runs in four innings for St. Francis.
- St. Francis High junior Nash Horton had three hits, including one double, one stolen base, two runs scored and a pair of RBIs for the Sharks in a 14-9 victory over Carmel High in PCAL Gabilan Division baseball action April 24. Fellow teammate senior Junior Ibarra had three hits, two runs scored, three RBIs and a stolen base.
- St. Francis High senior Trey Silva allowed one earned run while recording six strikeouts in over four innings for the Sharks in an 11-5 win over Hollister High in PCAL Gabilan Division action April 22. Silva also batted 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three RBIs. Micah Cervantes had a pair of hits, including a triple, two runs scored and three RBIs.
- St. Francis High senior Matthew Enright shot a 48 to help the Sharks boys’ golf team win PCAL Cypress Division Match No. 4 with a team score of 281 at Gilroy Golf Course on April 24. Tye Sutherland (50), Chris Bocanegra (56), Brady Stidham (61) and Cash Gomez (66) also scored for St. Francis.
- San Lorenzo Valley High junior Jori Fields-Rapley batted 4-for-5, including two triples, one double, four RBIs and one run scored in a 14-5 win over Soquel High in SCCAL softball play April 25. Fields-Rapley allowed five runs (three earned) on 11 hits, while recording six strikeouts. Cheyenne Casey had three triples, two RBIs and one run scored, and fellow teammate Sophia Samiento scored a team-leading three runs for the Cougars.
- Scotts Valley High sophomore Jazzy Phillips batted 2-for-4 with two RBIs for the Falcons in a 7-1 win against Aptos High in SCCAL softball action April 25. Freshman pitcher Chloe Kent recorded 11 strikeouts in the circle and allowed just one run on two hits for Scotts Valley. Fellow teammate Gracie Delgado had one home run and one double.
- Scotts Valley High sophomore Jacob Pauka hit a double that drove in the game-winning run for the Falcons baseball team in a 5-4 non-league victory over Alisal High in eight innings April 27. Lukas Bloom set up the go-ahead score after he stole second base. Jack Sanders batted 3-for-3, including one double and two RBIs. Clayton Pryor batted 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one walk and one stolen base, while Jack Abel had a pair of base hits and one RBI. Scotts Valley freshman pitcher Bryce McDonnell allowed four runs (one earned) on three hits, while racking up five strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings pitched. Bloom allowed one hit, two walks and one strikeout to record the win for the Falcons.
- Watsonville High sophomore Ameila Martinez allowed just one earned run on six hits while recording five strikeouts for the Wildcatz in a 3-1 victory over Carmel High in PCAL Mission Division softball play April 24. Julia Maldonado, Esperanza Sigala and Audriana Gonzalez each recorded one hit and scored one run for Watsonville. Fellow teammate Mia Espinoza had one RBI.
- Watsonville High junior Nate Aguilar won the triple jump with a leap of 42 feet, 1 1/2 inches at the PCAL Mission Division Championships at North Monterey County High School on April 26. He also took third in the high jump (5-8) and fifth in the long jump (18-2). Fellow teammate senior Ruben Mora placed second in the 400 (53.26 seconds) and fourth in the 110 hurdles (18.24).
- Watsonville High junior Katelynn Ruiz won both the 1600m (5 minutes, 27.74 seconds) and 3200 (11:52.36) at the PCAL Mission Division Championships at North Monterey County High School on April 26. Fellow teammate senior Jocelyn Guzman won the 300 hurdles in 50.31.
Games to Watch
- Watsonville vs. Pacific Grove, softball – Tuesday at 4:30pm: The Wildcatz (14-2, 8-1), winners of seven straight PCAL Mission Division games, will attempt to stay ahead of the league standings against the Breakers (10-8-1, 6-2), who are not too far behind.
- Watsonville vs. Pajaro Valley, baseball – Saturday at noon: The Wildcatz (2-18, 1-13) and Grizzlies (5-11, 5-8) will square off in a non-league cross-town rivalry game for Military Appreciation Day at Harlan Guy Field at Watsonville High School.
- SCCAL Championships, track and field – Saturday at 10am: A group of Aptos High athletes will compete against the best of what the league has to offer at the SCCAL Track and Field Championships at Soquel High School.
