The new 80-unit housing development at 78 Atkinson Lane in Watsonville by MidPen Housing is moving skyward.
Situated between Atkinson Lane and Brewington Avenue, the development is the second phase of the nearby Pippin Orchards.
The project, part of a multiphase development plan approved some two decades ago, will feature three 3-story buildings, an open gathering space and 137 parking spaces. Bill Jenkins, project manager for L&D Construction Co., Inc., said siding and roofing are currently being completed.
The first phase was completed at 56 Atkinson Lane in 2019. Like that project, every unit will be deed-restricted under the county’s affordable housing policies. Thirty-nine of the units will be deed-restricted to farmworker families, 37 would be filled through vouchers from the county’s Housing Authority and all of them would be listed between 30%-60% of the area’s median income.
The entrance to the 78 Atkinson Lane development will stem off Brewington Avenue and not allow through traffic from Brewington Avenue to Atkinson Lane.
Plans include a community room with kitchen, learning center, property management and services office, secured bike storage, play area with structure, teen recreational area with amphitheater, electric barbecue and picnic area, drought-tolerant landscaping and water-efficient irrigation systems, and photovoltaic panels.
