SANTA CRUZ—California Highway Patrol officers on Thursday arrested four juveniles and an adult male—all from San Jose—after a chase that began on Mission Street in Santa Cruz continued onto Highway 1 and ended in San Mateo County.
The driver, a 15-year-old girl, had been reported missing, according to CHP Officer Alyssa Gutierrez. The vehicle was associated with her, but it is unclear whether she had permission to take it.
She was charged with felony reckless evading a peace officer, felony reckless evading causing injury, resisting and delaying a peace officer, and driving without a valid driver license. She was booked into Santa Cruz County Juvenile Hall.
Gutierrez says that officers saw the vehicle speeding north on Swift Street just before 1am in a Honda Accord. When they tried to stop the vehicle, the driver fled.
The pursuit ended when the driver crashed into a dirt embankment along Highway 84 east of Sylvan Way, Gutierrez says.
As the Honda came to rest five occupants including the driver, fled on foot. CHP officers quickly arrested all five occupants without incident.
All suffered minor injuries. The adult was identified as Michael Baker. He was booked into the San Mateo County Jail.
