Aptos High senior guard Jaylen Dang had 12 points for the Mariners’ girls basketball team in a 54-52 loss to North Salinas High in the North Salinas Sportsmanship Classic championship on Dec. 18.
Dang, who was named to the all-tournament team, also hauled in five rebounds to go along with three assists.
Daeja Hollands made two free throws with 20 seconds left to help the Vikings to victory.
Senior forward Grace Parry scored a team-high 15 points to go along with five rebounds and three steals for Aptos. Senior forward Jasmine Ackerman added eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.
Freshman guard Miricole Baity added seven points, three steals and two rebounds for the Mariners (8-2), who will host the Aptos Varsity Shootout on Dec. 28.
Aptos 52, Salinas 33: Jasmine Ackerman had 12 points, 10 rebounds and three steals in the Mariners’ win in the North Salinas Sportsmanship Classic semifinals on Dec. 17.
Jaylen Dang and Grace Parry each scored 14 points for Aptos.
St. Francis 54, Ceiba 14: Mariah Montalvo scored 15 points to lead the Sharks to a crushing win against the Spartans in non-league action on Dec. 17.
Nevaeh Litel scored 13 points, Isabella Sumano had 12 points and Klarisse Dayrit added six for St. Francis (3-3), which hosts the Lady Shark Shootout on Dec. 28.
Boys basketball
Aptos 50, Carmel 32: Cameron Saldana had 14 points and three steals to lead the Mariners to third place at the Carmel Tournament on Dec. 18.
Jack Spinelli recorded a double-double—11 points and 11 rebounds—for Aptos, and all-tournament selection Max Baldeh had seven points, three rebounds, three assists and three steals.
The Mariners (10-1) play Thurgood Marshall Academic High of San Francisco at the 8th Annual Aptos High/Santa Cruz Warriors Tournament on Dec. 27 at 2pm.
Whitney 75, Aptos 61: The Mariners suffered their first loss of the season in the Carmel Tournament semifinals on Dec. 17.
Cameron Saldana paced the Mariners (9-1) with 21 points. Jack Spinelli had 13 points before fouling out. Max Baldeh scored nine points and Hassan Ayyad chipped in eight points.
Boys soccer
Aptos 9, Anzar 0: Diego Tiran had three goals and one assist in the Mariners’ non-league rout on Dec. 17.
Fredys Abrego scored twice, Erick Vasquez and Kaleb Plascencia each had a goal and assist, and Nami Banks and Roberto Muñoz also scored. Achilles Carrillo had three assists and Andrew López added an assist
Goalie Ulises Hernández made three saves for the Mariners (4-2-1), who plays at Soquel High in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener on Jan. 4 at 7pm.
MVC 4, Scotts Valley 0: Christian Linares notched a hat trick for the Mustangs in a non-league win over the Falcons on Dec. 17
Linares’ scored all three goals in the second half (58’, 75’, 84’), and Mario Melo added one in the 69th for MVC (2-2-2), which plays St. Francis on Tuesday at 5pm.
Lincoln 2, Watsonville 0: The Wildcatz suffered their first loss of the season to rival Lincoln High of San Jose in the Gold Division championship match at the Homestead Christmas Cup on Dec. 18.
Next up, Watsonville (4-1-2) will host Mater Dei (4-0-0) of Chula Vista on Dec. 27 at 5pm.
Girls soccer
Aptos 7, at Watsonville 0: Senior forward Jazmine Castañeda had four goals and an assist to lead the Mariners to a non-league smashing win against the Wildcatz on Dec. 18.
Gwen Chapman put the Mariners on the board in the seventh minute and finished with two goals. Kylie Nelson also scored for the Mariners.
Ava Hymes and Angelique Nunez had two assists, and Elizabeth Randolph had one assist for Aptos (8-0-1), which will host Soquel High in the teams’ SCCAL opener on Jan. 4 at 7pm.
Goalie Julianna Mendez made 10 saves for the Wildcatz (5-4-1), who plays Gilroy High in the teams’ Pacific Coast Athletic League Gabilan Division opener on Jan. 12 at 5:45pm.
Girls wrestling
CVHS Classic: Aptos sophomore Janie Houser (126 pounds) went 3-1 with two pins to place second at the 20th annual Castro Valley Girls Wrestling Classic on Dec. 18.
Houser was pinned by Armijo High senior Ashlee Gutierrez in the championship match.
