Arte del Corazón returns Friday with hip-hop theme

WATSONVILLE—Throughout the pandemic, Watsonville-based organization Arte del Corazón has been staging open-air art shows to showcase local artists.

The idea for the shows came from Monica Galvan, who has teamed up with other artists and performers to plan events at Romo Park on Main Street, across from the City Plaza.

This Friday the show returns with “Hip Hop Mercado Artesanal,” featuring live graffiti art demonstrations, an open mic for spoken word poetry, a live DJ and a “hip-hop dance cypher.”

Local dancer and choreographer Luis Sanchez, who helped organize the event along with Venessa Ledesma, said that it was special to him to have this show, as he was raised on hip-hop.

“I’m grateful that I have been a part of this community able to show them about the culture and true meaning of hip-hop,” he said. “Sometimes you’ve got to just give a culture a chance, you never know what you might learn.”

“Hip Hop Mercado Artesanal” will be held Friday 2-7pm. For information visit artedelcorazon.com.
