Police nab alleged jewelry store burglar

SANTA CRUZ—A man suspected of robbing a jewelry store in downtown Santa Cruz was arrested Thursday after a tipster recognized him from security footage, Santa Cruz Police Lt. Arnold Vasquez said.

Gregory Richard Burros, 34, was charged with burglary. He was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $100,000 bail, jail records showed.

Police responded to a call of a commercial burglary at the Super Silver Jewelry store in the 1300 block of Pacific Avenue about 3am Wednesday.

Responding officers discovered the front window of the business had been smashed, and several items had been stolen.

Store owners told the Pajaronian the loss amounted to more than $80,000.

After police released Burros’ image from store security cameras, a community member called to say they recognized him, Vasquez said.

Neighborhood Policing Team officers on patrol spotted a vehicle believed to be associated with Burros on the 100 block of Doyle Street about 10am, Vasquez said. Those officers watched the vehicle for “a period of time,” Vasquez said, before making the arrest.

SCPD detectives are looking into possible connections between Burros and other burglaries in the immediate area. Anyone with information is asked to contact SCPD Det. Trevor Kendall at 420-5963 or the Crime Tip Line at 420-5995.
