APTOS—A Watsonville man was arrested Friday and charged with driving under the influence of drugs after allegedly striking an 88-year-old man, California Highway Patrol Officer Sam Courtney said.

Joseph Granados, 29, was booked into Santa Cruz County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail, jail records showed.

According to Courtney, the victim was walking to his mailbox crossing Freedom Boulevard west of Mariner Way at about 1:50pm. Granados’ 1997 Honda struck him, and then struck mailboxes on the south shoulder of Freedom Boulevard.

The pedestrian suffered major injuries, Courtney said. He was transported to Dominican Hospital by ambulance and then flown to Valley Medical Center. Granados was not injured.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
