Hundreds attended Wednesday’s memorial for Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Sgt. Damon Gutzwiller, who was gunned down while on duty June 6 in Ben Lomond. A miles-long motorcade that started at the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk and threaded through the county began the day. Hundreds of formally dressed police personnel, family, friends and others gathered at Cabrillo College’s Carl Conelly Stadium for the service. Some came from as far away as San Diego, San Francisco, Fresno and Los Angeles. It was capped with a flyover by four helicopters in a ‘missing man’ formation.

My wife Sarah and I went out to a restaurant recently and were able to sit at a table for the first time in over 90 days. It felt odd—at first, anyway. We went to The Crepe Place, a Santa Cruz fixture since 1973. Though they moved a few times, got crushed by a falling cliff and shaken to the ground in the ‘89 Loma Prieta Earthquake, they’re still here. The owner, Vanessa, said she and her husband bought it about two years ago. They held on to most of the menu through the change. They also kept the restaurant’s distinct flavor, which includes outdoor tables in a lush shady garden. They have a full old-style bar and a small stage where they, in the past, kept a regular cycle of live bands coming through. The meal was fabulous and the service was great—the experience was refreshing and comforting. Our servings were large enough to doggie bag our way through lunch the next day. We’d both recommend the eatery. As far as virus safety standards, we felt they had a comfortable working formula that allowed us to de-mask once we landed at our table. It worked out well.
