WATSONVILLE—A man in his 30s was seriously injured Tuesday when he shot himself in the parking lot at Motel 6 in Watsonville.

Watsonville Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Pulido said two men were inside a Honda Civic at the motel, 125 Silver Leaf Drive, just before 10 a.m. One of the men drew a gun and shot himself, Pulido said.

She said officers on a routine patrol were investigating a suspicious car report at the motel just before the shooting.

Little information was released about the victim, who Pulido said is from out of the area.

Police are treating the incident as a self-inflicted gunshot wound that appears to be an attempted suicide.

“We are not dealing with this incident as a criminal matter,” Pulido said.

The victim was taken to an out of county trauma center with a life-threatening wound.
